Many still have difficulty proving the cloud value

While settling down to a nice night of euro 2020 football on the tv I decided to read a recently published report into cloud adoption & associated investments made in the cloud. In my defence the game was Spain v's Sweden which finished 0-0.

The report pointed to a gulf between the enthusiasm for the technology and the actual results being realised at an operational level. 92% of the executives questioned in the study polled that they had adopted cloud for many parts of their business operations but the interesting number here is that 53% of the respondents acknowledged they had failed to realise the true value from their cloud investments so far.

Unfortunately the report didn't go into why so here are my thoughts as to why such a high number of respondents feel they are failing.

Start with your eyes open

Don't fall into the trap of over promising and under delivering.

Align the business strategy to the cloud strategy

The difficulties in measuring the cloud's value could indicate a lack of alignment between cloud adoption and business strategy, If your business leaders pursue general outcomes such as cost reduction or top-line growth, it can be hard to measure and attribute it to the act of something in the cloud.

Play the long game

Although sometimes you can see return on your investments quickly it is always better to ensure your executive team are prepared for the long haul, Cloud is usually not a quick fix.

Optimise and chargeback

spreading the cost of any project across the departments which use the infrastructure is not a new thing, however when businesses consume public cloud such as AWS, Azure or Google simple things like cost charge analysis and resource utilisation can be difficult to achieve, unless you work with Simoda obviously.
